Rotary raises money for youth projects

Date published: 07 June 2010

A sponsored walk to raise money for Radcliffe Rotary Club’s youth projects was supported by youngsters and their parents.

The walk was over five-miles and started at the Royal Oak pub in Water Street. About 50 walkers followed a route along the canal towpath to the Elton Reservoir and back to raise funds for the club’s youth programmes, Radcliffe Girls and Boys Club, and other local youth charities.

This was the second family walk event organised by the club.

Last year, around 200 walkers helped to raise more than £450 for the Radcliffe Scouts’ camp site.

Rotarian Jan Heathcote said this year’s event has raised about the same amount for the girls and boys club.

Mr Heathcote said: “We are wondering why there were so few people this year.

“The weather was absolutely super, there was a cool breeze and the walk itself was not strenuous.

“We called at the Elton Sailing Club and they looked after us very well.

“It’s hard to get people involved and everyone wants sponsorship for different things these days.”

The members of The Rotary Club of Radcliffe are drawn from a wide cross section of people from across the local community. They meet weekly for a meal, to enjoy friendship and to discuss ways of serving others. Social, sporting and inter-club events take place throughout the year.
