New Bury police station opens its doors to the public

Date published: 30 May 2010

Bury police officers threw open the doors of the newly completed Bury police station on Dunster Road for a special open day last weekend featuring children’s entertainment and police-themed activities.

Visitors were given guided tours around the cells and staff from the Crime Scene Investigation Unit gave demonstrations on gathering evidence from scenes of crime including obtaining finger prints and patterns from footwear.

Outside, children flocked around the many police exhibits including traffic cars, motorcycles, quad bikes, horses and mobile CCTV unit.

Older visitors could take a step back in time and look at the special vintage police vehicle display.

Visitors wilting in the soaring temperatures were treated to a cooling shower from the two Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue pumps in attendance.

A special fly past by the GMP helicopter gave visitors something to fan them down.

The crowds were kept entertained throughout the day by Tower FM and the GMP Band as they visited a range of special stalls.

These included the Bury Library Service marquee which featured big screen Wii games and a historical police artefact display run by members of the Sir Robert Peel Society.

Bury FC Cheerleaders added a high-kicking splash of colour to proceedings, while Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team gave a demonstration of the skills needed to bring someone safely down from a mountain top using Bury division’s Chief Inspector Carol Martin as a willing volunteer.

Bury’s Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Jon Rush said: “The day was a tremendous success and I would like to thank everyone who took part to make it such a special day.

“A major part of the open day was showing people that we, and the new police station, are an integral part of the community and here to assist the public at all times.

“I would like to thank the many thousands of people, who chose to share this day with us, for their fantastic support.”
