Local library helps Bury man with computer skills

Date published: 28 May 2010

A Bury man’s IT skills have benefited from the help given by Bury Learning Libraries unit.
David Francis, 63, first used a computer for work 22 years ago and, up until 12 months ago, had never used one since.

After much pestering from his daughter to get into the 21st Century, David went to his local library in Tottington to get help with learning computer skills.

Bury Learning Libraries unit, which is based at Tottington and Prestwich, provides online learning where you can get the help and support in a way that is adapted to the individual.
Since doing the “Get You Started” and the “My Guide” online courses, David says that he is really enjoying using a computer and is keen to learn more.

David said: “When I had to use a computer for work it was self-taught and I only did what was necessary for work and had no further interest whatsoever.

“Since going to Bury Learning Libraries and learning at a pace that suited me, while getting help as and when I needed it, I don’t feel too worried about computers anymore.

He added: “Michael O’Callaghan, the assistant librarian, has been so helpful and patient. It was a real pleasure to come to the classes.”
