Conservatives gain Bury North

The Conservatives won back Bury North from Labour at tonight’s General Election count. David Nuttall won the seat which Labour’s David Chaytor had held since 1997.

In Bury South, Labour’s Ivan Lewis held off the challenge from Conservative local councillor Michelle Wiseman to retain the seat he won in 1997.

05:10am: Ivan Lewis, of the Labour party, has retained his seat the MP of Bury South, with 19,508 votes. 

05:00am: David Nuttall, of the Conservative party, has become the MP for Bury North constituency with 18,070 votes

03:10am: Michelle Wiseman, the Conservative candidate, for Bury South has just arrived with daughter Danielle. She said, 'it was too close to call.'

02:57am: 64.10% turnout for Bury South and so the counting has begun.

02:49am: To a round of applause the counting begins for Bury North

02:44am: 66.32% turnout for Bury North.

02:34am: Holyrood Ward is the last to be verified.

01:10am: David Nuttall, Conservative candidate, for Bury North said he had fought a good campaign and that it was hopefully fourth time lucky for him. He stated 'it would be a surprise for him to move backwards at this late stage.' He described the high turnout this year as being 'good for democracy', due to the need for change.

00:50am: Ivan Lewis, Labour candidate, for Bury South, says it is one of the most dramatic elections in the last decade, and there is no doubt that the expenses scandal and the televised debates hve had a detrimental effect on all parties but it is down to the voters at the end of the day.

11:50pm: Holyrood Ward and Sedgley Ward arrive also for Bury South

11:10pm: Pilkington Park Ward arrives for Bury South

10:50pm: Red Vales Ward, Churchward, East Ward, Elton Ward, Moorside Ward for Bury North.

10.30pm: Maryam Khan, the Labour candidate for Bury North has told us she came into the election as the 'underdog'. And has put a lot of time and effort into her campaign and would like to thank the people of Bury North for their support, she has pledged to be 'open' and 'transparent', in regard, to expenses to have them independently audited.

10:18pm: Ramsbottom Ward is the first box to arrive Bury North

10:15pm: St Mary's Ward is the first box to arrive Bury South

10:10pm: The general consesus around the building is that David Nuttall of the Conservatives will win the seat in Bury North, in contrast with Ivan Lewis who looks like his seat will be safe.
