Bury College Student gets chance to shine

Date published: 22 March 2010

A Bury College student has been accepted onto the University of Manchester’s Access Programme.

Shahzad Hussain, 16, is currently studying AS levels in Chemistry, Biology, Law and Psychology at the college and dreams of attending Manchester University to study Law.

The programme aims to help talented people in the Greater Manchester area realise their ambitions of going to University.

It also supports students from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in higher education.

Shahzad had to take a Ravens test, complete two assignments and submit a personal statement, competing against 700 other applicants for the 350 places on the programme.

Now that he is in the programme, he can attend a 3 day summer school at the University to give him a real experience of campus life. As well as it being a great experience and an opportunity to show his potential, it will give him an extra 40 points onto his UCAS score, opening up more course options.

The Y12 student said: “I am shocked and overjoyed I made it onto such a competitive programme at a really prestigious University. This programme will show me what to expect and an insight into what University will be like when I have completed my A-levels at Bury College.”
