Date published: 17 March 2010
A man sustained numerous cuts to his face when he was struck by shards of broken glass.
It happened at the Turf public house on Wash Lane in Bury at about 10pm on Saturday 13 March 2010.
The 29-year-old man was stood outside the pub smoking a cigarette when two men walked out and an argument broke out.
The offender then threw a pint glass at him, which the man blocked with his hand causing the glass to smash. However, the shards of broken glass caused numerous cuts to his hands and face and narrowly missed his eyes.
Having thrown the glass, the offender then ran off. He is described as white, with shaved hair, of a stocky build, about 20-years-old and about 5ft 8in tall. He was wearing a red and grey-hooped polo T-shirt, tracksuit bottoms and trainers.
He was with another man about 6ft 3in tall, with dark brown short hair who was wearing a multi-coloured short-sleeved T-shirt.
Police are now appealing to anyone who witnessed the attack or who has information to come forward.
Detective Inspector Lynn Vernon said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a man who was simply minding his own business.
"It is no exaggeration to say that he could have suffered very serious injuries as a result of this senseless assault, and could even have been blinded.
"I want to stress that we do not believe the offender and his friend are regulars at the pub, and it is important to add that the vast majority of pub goers behave in an appropriate and responsible way. We work very closely with licensees and retailers to encourage sensible drinking, and I do not want to give out a false impression of our town.
"It is important therefore that we find this man and hammer home the message that individuals who behave in this way will be punished. I would appeal to anyone who has information to come forward."
Anyone with information is asked to call Bury CID on 0161 856 8243 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
