Date published: 12 March 2010

A delegation of senior officers and councillors from Barnsley Council visited Bury Markets on Wednesday, 10 March 2010 to find out how Bury’s World Famous Market continues to operate so successfully.

The delegation from Barnsley wanted to look at how they can continue to enhance their reputation and how to revitalise and invest in their Market. The representatives from Barnsley were keen to learn how Bury Market retainsretains it’s customers and maintain their good reputation as one of the UK’s leading markets.

Issues discussed included recent successes; promotional and marketing activity, trader and management relations, rent levels and investment.

Bury Market is visited by hundreds of thousands of satisfied shoppers every week and has been a key player in its local retail sector for over 500 years. This is a shopping attraction which has earned the enviable reputation of ‘Bury’s World Famous Market’ from the many customers from all over the world who keep coming back to visit.

Councillor Dorothy Gunther, Executive Member for Environment, said “The traders on the market are honest, decent, hard working people. They do their best to attract hundreds of visitors to the town every week. With all the recent high profile activity it’s no surprise that so many TV companies and radio stations are using the market for broadcasts and we are pleased that member of the Barnsley Market team came to Bury to learn from us ”.
