Bury enters the Young Consumers of the Year competition

Bury Trading Standards have teamed up with Prestwich Arts College , to enter the Greater Manchester Regional Finals of The Young Consumers of the Year Competition at the Trafford Centre on Wednesday March 10.

The team of four consisting of captain Anthony Bladen, Keivah McArdle, Daniel Harper, and Saira Nawaz will be representing Bury. They will be taking part in the quiz, testing their knowledge of consumer rights and current affairs.

This annual event is organised by Bury Trading Standards for young people, and run by the Trading Standards Institute. Greater Manchester Regional finalists go through to the national final held during the National Annual Conference of the Institute, this year to be held in Edinburgh during the week of 15-17 June 2010. The national prize is £1000 for the school as well as other gifts and monetary prizes for the students.

Some 10,000 young people, aged between 14 and 18 years old, take part each year in the knock out quiz and gain a lasting appreciation of consumer rights and responsibilities. Issues covered include: 

  • Consumer Rights and Responsibilities 
  • Money and Finance 
  • Food & Health 
  • Safety and the Environment 
  • Europe

Peter Jagger Head of Trading Standards commented “It’s a fun, challenging, interactive competition, complementing the Citizenship Curriculum. We hope the team from Prestwich Arts College have an enjoyable time and wish them luck”.
