Over-50s are feeling good for life

Date published: 06 March 2010

More than 600 people flooded into the Elizabethan Suite to join the celebrations of the Age of Opportunities programme “Feeling good for life”.

The Age of Opportunities was launched three years ago to promote the health and wellbeing of people aged 50 and above in Bury.

The event was opened by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Sheila Magnall, and guest speaker was Pat Jones-Greenhalgh, executive director of adult care services.

The main hall was filled with stalls from public, private and voluntary sectors offering information and advice, while the upstairs rooms offered activities and performances. Highlights included free hand massages and a nail file and polish from the beauty department at Bury College, the Bury FC cheerleaders, local celebrity Harry Robinson singing “Songs of the Stars”, along with Tai Chi and herb planting with Groundwork.

Everyone who attended received a free recycled cotton goodie bag containing a wind-up torch and other give-aways, and was entered into a draw to win prizes from: Antony for Hair, Bond Hotel, Bury FC, Camelot, Halfords, Highfield Florists, Ribby Hall Village, The Met, Total Fitness and Willis Bros.

Many organisations were able to sign up new members and generate support for their services. Bury LINks had a fantastic response with more than 150 new members.
