Update on council response to weather conditions

Date published: 05 January 2010

Owing to exceptional weather conditions, Bury Council have deployed snowploughing vehicles to clear the snow on priority routes around the borough and the vehicles will continue to work to clear the roads throughout the day.

Snow ploughs are deployed in extreme conditions only and they are designed to clear the road of large amounts of snow. While we have enough grit for the immediate future, in the current circumstances gritting the road is not effective and focussing our efforts on snow ploughing to keep the main routes open is the main priority.

We are deploying a number of resources on foot to keep access open to key buildings, including health centres and Fairfield Hospital. The road conditions remain hazardous due to the large amount of snow which has fallen and continued freezing temperatures. There are travel problems throughout the borough causing severe disruption and public transport is also affected.

The council is advising people to think before they travel and only undertaken essential journeys. If you do have to travel, make sure you are prepared and take warm clothing, a warm drink, a shovel, and a mobile phone with you.
