Town crier joins fight against Christmas crime in Bury
Date published: 21 December 2009
Shoppers in Bury town centre took a step back in time when they were greeted by the booming voice, tolling bell and crime prevention messages of a traditional town crier.
Clad in frilled livery, Barry McQueen spent the day warning shoppers to beware of thieves, pickpockets and robbers as they went about their Christmas shopping on Thursday (17 December).
He was joined by Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) from the Bury East Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) who talked to shoppers and provided advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
The initiative was part of a forcewide campaign during the run up-to Christmas, raising awareness of burglary, robbery, vehicle crime, alcohol consumption and the consequences of disorderly behaviour.
The town crier visited Bury College to urge students to register their valuables such as mobile phones and iPods on the www.immobilise.com database which police can access and compare items with those found or recovered from suspected criminals. The service is free and is quick and easy to use.
Inspector Charlotte Cadden of the Bury East NPT said: “It’s the time of year when the majority of people are shopping for presents however, thieves will be doing exactly the same and could be looking for any opportunity to take them off your hands.
“It is vital that all valuables and presents are taken out of your vehicle and it is parked up in a secure area. Don’t forget ‘alarms, locks, lights’ in order to make sure burglars aren’t tempted to steal any Christmas presents from your homes and don’t leave gifts under the tree when you’re not home. “
