Plan a safe journey home from your Christmas party this year

Date published: 17 December 2009

Emergency services across Greater Manchester are urging partygoers to think about their safety and how they plan to get home from after their Christmas parties this year.

Police operations will be in place to tackle violence, irresponsible drinking, anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse and crimes that frequently occur at this time of year.

Inspector Ron Orr from the Manchester City Safe team, said: "Victims of alcohol-related crime and often offenders make themselves vulnerable or make wrong decisions when they have had too much to drink.

"Additional police officers will be out on the streets during this busy time to reassure the public that we are all working together to take care of those who need it but we ask that people stop and think about putting their own safety first.

"By remembering to stay together with friends and look after each other, plan a safe route home and have a soft drink in-between alcoholic drinks people will be far less likely to become a victim of crime or violence."

Greater Manchester Police is currently running a campaign to ensure that licensees do not serve alcohol to those who have clearly had too much to drink.  This will continue to be enforced during the festive period with the help of Trading Standards and Manchester City Council.
