Ugly Fruit and Vegetables are back on the Menu at Bury Market

Date published: 23 July 2009

With the recent lifting of the EU ban on misshapen fruit and vegetables being sold on market stalls, and in supermarkets, shoppers can hopefully expect to pay a lot less for their “5 a day” providing they aren’t too bothered what shape it comes in.

With the lifting of the ban it is expected that the ‘ugly fruit and vegetables’ could be sold at approximately 40% less than their more attractive counterparts; helping cash strapped shoppers to reduce their bills substantially.

So over the forthcoming months, look out for curly cucumbers, forked carrots and knobbly potatoes; that years ago where the norm and caused shoppers to pause and chuckle to themselves.

And just remember they may not look great, but taste wise they are just the same and considerably cheaper.

Craig Allen from Bury Market said “Whilst the fruit and veg may not look as presentable as other items on Bury’s award winning market, this opportunity will allow local residents to pick up some bargains and eat healthily during the credit crunch”
