Bury picks up prestigious award

Date published: 03 July 2009

Bury Council’s commitment to improving the skills of its workforce has been formally recognised.

The authority has won the Skills Award (with Distinction) from the North West Employers Organisation and its partners.

This recognises the quality and effectiveness of the council’s workforce planning and skills development, and its commitment to the Skills Pledge – a signed promise to our workforce that we will do all we can to support their learning and development both now and in the future.

An assessor visited Bury to meet members of the Skills Partnership, which includes employees, managers, learning providers and union representatives, to hear about “Bury’s Journey” in terms of learning and development.

Bury’s focus is “Skills for Now – Skills for the Future”, which means that the council and its partners from the public and private sector must continue to commission and deliver high quality learning and training which has a real impact on service delivery.

Councillor Jack Walton, executive member for human resources and performance, said: “I know that it is through our employees that we will achieve our ambitions. Skilled people deliver better performance, and that means better services for the people of Bury. We are very proud to receive this award on behalf of our workforce.”
