A blooming great time in Whitefield
Date published: 26 June 2009
Residents are being encouraged to make their part of Whitefield bloom again this year.
The Elms Tenants & Residents Association is once more running a gardening competition and everyone in the Elms area is invited to enter.
There is a category to suit everyone: front/side garden, tub, back garden, children, back yard/patio, school/community, hanging basket, environmentally friendly and special effort.
The judges will be local horticultural experts Yvonne and David Moore. Yvonne said: “We really enjoy the judging. It is our opportunity to see some great gardens incorporating very diverse ideas and styles.”
To enter, complete a form and return it to Elms Community Centre in Green Lane, Whitefield by July 12. Judging takes place on Saturday August 1, so there is plenty of time to make the most of your garden.
Elms in Bloom 2009 is funded with a £718 grant from Whitefield and Unsworth Local Area Partnership.
Councillor Michelle Wiseman, LAP chairperson, said: “The LAP is very pleased to fund this project which recognises the efforts that many people make to provide attractive gardens and brighten up the area. Advice and grants are available through the partnership for other neighbourhoods which want to run their own gardening competitions.”
Help is at hand for any resident who feels that their garden is not up to scratch or brush up their gardening knowledge. Elms TRA also has a gardening club where residents learn from each other, swap plants and can practise their skills on a community flower bed.
