Markets Superintendents Barry Williams and Stephen Waddup from Bury St Edmunds plan to visit Bury’s World Famous Market on 06 March 2009 to find out how it continues to operate so successfully during the credit crunch.
Bury St. Edmunds Borough Council operates general provisions markets in two towns within the Borough. The largest is in Bury St Edmunds (known locally as just Bury), and a smaller market is held in the nearby town of Haverhill. Bury St Edmunds is a Chartered Market and Haverhill is regarded as an Ancient Market both are thought to date back to before William the Conqueror.
The team from Bury St Edmunds is particularly interested in retaining their customers and vendors and maintaining their good reputation - something Bury seems to have accomplished. They are to speak with the Bury Team, about their recent successes including awards, promotions, trader and management relations, rent levels and investment.
Bury Market is visited by hundreds of thousands of satisfied shoppers every week and has been a key player in its local retail sector for over 500 years and has earned the enviable reputation of ‘Bury’s World Famous Market’ due to the many customers from all over the world who keep coming back to visit.
Bury’s World Famous Market is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Bury Market Hall is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am – 5.00pm, with the exception of Tuesdays when a partial market is held 9.00am - 4.00pm.
