Bury’s Young People to Elect a Member of Youth Parliament
Date published: 09 February 2009
On Saturday 31 January a special event was held at Bury Town Hall to allow young people interested to find out how to get involved in this year’s election at Bury’s Youth Parliament Information Day.
The Youth Parliament sees representatives, elected by young people from every Local Authority across the United Kingdom come together to campaign and raise the profile of issues affecting young people.
Young people aged 11-18 will have the opportunity to vote in the next United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) election on 5 March. Bury’s young people will elect one member and two deputy members to the Youth Parliament.
Following the Information Day fourteen candidates have put themselves forward for election. The candidates come from eight different schools and colleges across the borough and are all hoping that young people in Bury will vote for them.
Large posters providing details about the candidates and what issues they will campaign for if elected will be displayed in the Connexions Centre, schools, colleges and youth centres across Bury.
On Thursday 5 March polling stations will be set up in every high school and college in the borough and in the Connexions Centre on Broad Street. Young people who live or are educated in Bury will be able to cast their vote between 9am and 3pm. The results of the election will be announced in Bury Council Chambers at 5pm on Friday 6 March.
