Both young and old encouraged to pop into Bury’s libraries

Ninety year old, Dr Harold Davidson proved it is never too late to learn a new skill with the Adult Learning Service based in Bury’s Libraries
Dr Davidson who lives in Prestwich has attended the Creative Writing course based at Bury Adult Learning Centre for the last four years. He decided to join the course after spending several years writing science fiction as a way of extending his writing skills and where he found that he was also quite adept at poetry composition and has even had one of his poems published in Never Bury Poetry.
His wife and family are very supportive and proud of what he has achieved and he is still very keen to carry on learning new things as he also previously enrolled on an IT course so that he could design his own website. He has made lots of new friends since joining the course and the group regularly met up during the Summer term break.
At the other end of the age spectrum, Arianwen Kaur Bradley-Sutton is the youngest library member to sign up at Unsworth library. Arianwen was born on 30 October and her mother was keen to get her joined up so she could receive her first Bookstart pack.
The Bookstart pack contains board books for babies, library membership and guidance leaflet for parents on books for babies and it is the first of three packs a child receives before the age of three.
Arianwen’s mother, Hareena who is also a library assistant based at Unsworth Library, said: “Even at this early age I am reading to her and I feel it helps to make the bonding with your child much stronger. Although she cannot understand what I am saying, she is listening to the sound of my voice and it is a well known fact that children develop much better when parents read with their children”.
Bury Library Service is always keen to encourage new members whatever their age and can offer an extensive range of services to suit everyone. For further details on all library services available check our website www.bury.gov.uk/libraries.
