A Glorious Garden for Whitefield Primary School

Date published: 19 September 2008

Parents and children at Whitefield Primary School have been getting mucky and putting their gardening skills into action over the past few months to improve the school garden.

The Mayor of Bury, Councillor Peter Ashworth, will attend a special garden party at the school on 23 September. He will look round the new school garden which now has fruit and veg beds, a new rockery, as well as fully restored wild life and play areas.

Whitefield & Unsworth Local Area Partnership provided £1779 grants from ‘Kickstart’ and ‘Communities Health’ fund for this project. Help has also come from Social Services Adult Support Team and Groundwork’s Family Learning Programme. Groundwork provided important horticultural expertise, equipment, plants and staff to help complete the project. They will continue to provide and help and support over the next three years.

Local Parents have also established a group called ‘Growing Together’ to ensure that work continues to keep the garden in top condition. The group will ensure that fruit and veg from the garden is used by the school and they hope to organise plant swaps, gardening skills events and look at tackling other green grot spots.

Growing Together Chairperson, Ann Peace said, “We are delighted with the results of our hard work. We want to say a big thank you to every one involved and invite the local community to come and see what we have achieved.”

Cllr Michelle Wiseman, LAP Chairperson said, “I am very pleased that the Local Area Partnership has been able to support this project. I am looking forward to viewing the garden and seeing how the project develops over the coming years”.
