Security guard attacked in robbery

Date published: 19 September 2008

A security guard was attacked during an armed robbery at petrol station in Prestwich.

Shortly after midday on Wednesday 17 September 2008, a security guard was making a cash delivery at the Shell garage on Middleton Road when he was approached by two men, one armed with a sledgehammer, the other with a crow bar.

The men demanded cash before hitting the victim on the arm with a crow bar.

The men stole the cash boxes, containing a large amount of cash, before running off towards Windsor Road. The men were then seen getting into a black VW Passat which was found abandoned shortly afterwards off Brooklands Road, Prestwich.

Both men are described as being about 5ft 9in tall and of average build. One of the offenders was white and the other had darker skin. Both spoke with local accents.

Detective Inspector Lynne Vernon from Bury CID said: "This appears to have been a well planned robbery.

"The security guards have been targeted and assaulted and the offenders have stolen a large amount of cash.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen the men fleeing from the getaway car to contact police."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Bury CID on 0161 856 8150, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
