Get reading to get healthy

Date published: 02 September 2008

The Library Service has recently purchased new books aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The Library Service teamed up with Bury Primary Care Trust to put forward a bid to the North West Health Centre Libraries Unit for a small grant of £1,800 to purchase a wide range of health related books for children and young people.

The new resources are aimed at professionals working with young people to provide them with important information and advice to support health promotion activities.

The resources allow people to explore the themes of Nutrition, Physical Activity, Safety, Personal hygiene, Oral & Sexual health, Drugs & Alcohol and Body Parts.
The new books chosen are now located in Bury Library.

The library service hope that this will be an opportunity to promote services to new clients, for example School Nurses teachers and other health professionals who may also wish to access the Reference and Information Service or School’s Library Service in Bury Library.

Councillor Beverly Sullivan, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said; “This is a fantastic opportunity for people who help and support young people and children across Bury to access some brand new up to date resources. The new books will help people learn about how to look after their own health or the best ways of promoting a healthy lifestyle to others”.

Lucy Anderson, Outreach Librarian at Bury PCT said “Strengthening our reference materials in this way is a real bonus for local professionals working with children and young people. Giving people access to a greater range of professional resources in this way can only help boost healthy outcomes for residents in the borough.”
