New community Heritage Museum and Archive in Ramsbottom
Date published: 27 January 2010
A new community Heritage Museum and Archive is to be created in Ramsbottom.
It will be located in the new extension, currently under construction, of Ramsbottom Library & Adult Learning Centre.
A project archivist will be recruited and volunteers from Ramsbottom Heritage Society mobilised to catalogue collections and plan exhibitions.
The work is possible thanks to the heritage society and Bury Archives Service winning a grant of £47,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, bolstered by an additional £2,000 from Bury library service.
The museum will officially open on one of the Heritage Open Days in early September but there will be many activities throughout the summer to celebrate the rich heritage of the area.
Tony Murphy, chair of Ramsbottom Heritage Society, said: "I'm delighted at the success of the bid which will enable us to catalogue and preserve the society's existing and future archives.
“It will also enable us to establish a heritage museum in the local library giving the society, in partnership with Bury’s Archive, Museum and Libraries services, a dedicated area for displays and exhibitions to maintain awareness and interest in the history and heritage of Ramsbottom."
