Chamber Consultation Win
Date published: 21 January 2012
With referendums for mayors in England’s eleven largest cities due in May, the Government issued a consultation before Christmas on the powers that any elected mayors should gain.
The Chamber gave its response and our voice has been heard. We argued that if a mayor of Manchester is elected, the powers they have should not be determined centrally by government but proposed by the bodies of Manchester who know best the needs of the city.
Minister for Cities, Greg Clark MP, issued the Government’s response on Monday which proposes that a bespoke system of deciding powers should be used instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. Salford is holding a referendum for an elected mayor next Thursday, 26 January, so the issue of elected mayors will remain on our agenda over the coming weeks and months and we’ll continue to keep you updated on events.

This makes absolute sense. The Salford Mayor (elected or appointed) should have a consultation connection added into that Greater Manchester progress. On a similar point can I urge all those action groups that have been let down over getting important work done by their Council to use the elections as I did in Doncaster. My "independent" standing was to get a safety improvement on local roads, the 2 year wait got that done in 6 weeks. People Power is a YES vote.
