Avoid being a victim of burglary this Christmas

Date published: 11 December 2009

Police in are urging residents to take a few simple steps to help them avoid becoming a victim of burglary this Christmas.

Darker nights provide extra opportunities for thieves and a pile of presents left on display may add an extra incentive to would-be thieves.

Research shows that people who take no precautions to safeguard their homes from burglars are ten times more likely to be a victim than those who follow these few simple pointers.

Don’t be a victim this Christmas:

  • Keep all ground floor windows locked or fit restrictors so they can only be slightly opened
  • Keep doors locked even when you are at home
  • Have a three point locking mechanism on external doors at the bottom, middle and top of the door
  • Use timer switches on lights when you are out to give the impression someone is at home

The Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
But who’s at the window and peering through
At presents and treasure wrapped up by you?

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The thief was inside with incredible ease
Eyeing the loot he was going to sieze

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
Now the thief filled his bag and with a snigger of glee
“Laptops and jewellery all for me”

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
No rest for the thief though, he works through the night
Not a thought for the children asleep out of sight.

The moral of the story that I need to bestow
Is secure your home, don’t leave presents on show
Authorized Access, you know you can trust
To fit locks and security, IT IS A MUST!
