Café culture takes to the streets

Date published: 22 June 2009

Valerie’s Café in Bury Market Hall is to feature in the upcoming Manchester International Festival.

A reconstruction of the café will be built on a float and feature in “Procession”, a free family event involving communities from across the region.

The procession has been put together as a piece of public art by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, aimed at being both accessible and surprising.

BBC2’s “The Culture Show” recently visited Bury Market to film Jeremy asking patrons of Valerie’s Café to take part in the procession on the float.

The festival procession takes place in Manchester’s Deansgate on Sunday July 5 from 2-3pm.

The Manchester International Festival runs from July 2 to 19 will feature on BBC2’s “The Culture Show” on July 8, 15 and 22 at 7pm.

To accompany “Procession”, a free exhibition runs at the Cornerhouse in Manchester from July 9 to August 23.
